TREKKING AND LANDSCAPE

“food & foot” routes

A walk in time, between Sorrento and Massa Lubrense.

After a suggestive passage through the narrow streets of the historical center of Sorrento, you walk slightly uphill along a stretch of the pre-Roman road that led to the Promuntorium Minervae, today Punta Campanella; once you reach the flat stretch, continue towards the Capo di Sorrento, coming so close to olive groves surrounded by high tuff stone walls. Thus the ruins of a maritime villa of the imperial age can be reached, masterfully built on a rocky promontory that reveals only at the last steps a suggestive natural basin where it is possible to swim. According to tradition, the queen of Naples Giovanna II used to do it. After a reasonable stop, the guided excursion continues towards Massa Lubrense, stopping in a characteristic citrus grove of the penisola sorrentina, where it will be possible to taste high quality typical products. The return to the center of Sorrento partly retraces the itinerary of the journey; alternatively, the use of public transportation is proposed to customers.

The mountain on the sea, trekking on Mount Faito

You reach the highest mountain of the Sorrento peninsula on board the Faito cable car from the “Circumvesuviana” station of Castellammare di Stabia in about 10 minutes, enjoying a bird’s eye view of the “City of Water” and most of the Gulf of Naples. At the exit of the upper station of the cable car take the ridge path that reaches the top of Mount Cercasole from an altitude of 1100, where the modern sanctuary of S. Michele Arcangelo stands . After a short stretch on a paved road you reach down a wide plain, after which you enter the Alta Via dei Monti Lattari. Going uphill you pass the source of the Acqua Santa ( the presence of some rare and endemic plants is remarkable) and, coming out of the beech forest, you gain the base of the Molare. The climb to the highest peak of the S. Angelo at Tre Pizzi follows a steep path carved into the rock: from the roof of the M. Lattari the view is lost on most of the coast of Campania, both to the south, up to and beyond Punta Licosa, and to the north, ranging in the days of clear air even beyond Capo Miseno, towards the Lazio coast. The view of the innumerable peaks of the southern Apennines is equally impressive. The second part of the itinerary follows the ridge of the Conocchia towards the west, with a view on the promontory of Punta Campanella and its natural extension, the island of Capri. This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the picnic with typical products from Campania. Circling a deep valley, you reach and cross a vast beech forest, in which some monumental trees survive, near the snow pits. When the beech trees give way to the conifers, the road is now very close to the cable car station, where the ring tour ends.

The emperors’ trekking, a time travel on the island of Capri

After a pleasant navigation by hydrofoil along the northern coast of the Sorrento peninsula, you will reach the island of Capri. You leave the chaotic Marina Grande taking up an ancient narrow road that in about 20 minutes leads to the heart of Capri, the famous “Piazzetta”. After a brief stop in the mundane center of the island in a few steps you will find the tranquility typical of the country roads, which lead on the heights overlooking the sea. On one of these, at the eastern end of the island, firstly we see a luxurious building from the early twentieth century, belonging to the French poet J. d’Adelsward Fersen, and then the remains of the ancient residential complex in which, according to tradition, the emperor Tiberius chose to live for ten years . You can access the archaeological site of Villa Jovis with an entrance ticket: an excellent opportunity to dive back in 2000 years! Thus reached the place of maximum altitude, the itinerary descends towards the panoramic terraces of the Astarita Park (beautiful views of the rocky pinnacles of the Faraglioni); a passage follows in the labyrinth of little streets that unravel in every direction. Before reaching the embarking marina, visitors can choose to visit the historic center of Capri on their own (we recommend a visit to the church of S. Stefano, the S. Giacomo monastery or, for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of the island’s natural treasures , a visit to the “I. Cerio” Museum). We suggest to seal the memory of the excursion to Capri tasting the homonymous almond and chocolate cake, the caprese cake.

Flying over the Amalfi Coast with the Path of the Gods

The Path of the Gods is among the most famous hiking trails in southern Italy : a path of spectacular beauty, along 6 kilometers between Agerola and Positano, which flies over the Amalfi Coast. The itinerary begins in the square of the hamlet of Bomerano (served by public transport) and, after a short stretch between houses and small plots, it reaches the first of the cavities that will be visible along the route. From Grotto Biscotto the path continues towards the pass of Colle Serra with light ups and downs among terraced slopes, which from the height of Paipo degrade towards the inhabited areas of Furore and Praiano. At the crossroads you choose to continue on the lower variant of the Path of the Gods to gain a passage in the area perhaps more characteristic of the entire itinerary: among the typical local stone artifacts we can see millennial activities that survive and draw new life thanks to the daily work of a young shepherd. So, it is possible to get in touch with the most genuine rural reality of the Coast and to fill the sensory experience with the taste of the cheese obtained from the transformation of goat’s milk. The Path of the Gods continues towards the west touching a high limestone wall and, a little later, for the first time unveils the town of Positano, surmounted by the imposing bulk of the S. Angelo at Tre Pizzi and the more reassuring Mount Comune. Circling a deep valley, the path goes towards Nocelle, an aerial hamlet of Positano, where we recommend a stop on the terrace in front of the church of S. Croce. Here we will evaluate together whether to reach Positano through Montepertuso street (1 h and 15 min approximately to cover 4.5 km of walking) or if we use the local mini-buses that take 20 minutes to the center of the tourist town. We will autonomously visit the center of Positano, after we have provided all the information for the return. You can choose between the hydrofoil that leaves from Positano for the port of Castellammare (seasonal service) and the bus that runs along the coastal road (SS 163) to Sorrento up to the railway line “Circumvesuviana” which in 20 minutes leads to Castellammare di Stabia.
